Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC

Our Firm

We are one of the largest law firms in Iowa and practice in nearly all fields of law.

Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC is a full-service law firm with offices in Cedar Rapids and Coralville, Iowa. The firm’s deep history dates back more than a century, encompassing Simmons’ history representing national (and international) firms in complex construction and intellectual property litigation and Moyer & Bergman’s distinctly entrepreneurial genesis. In short, the firm’s “client is king” philosophy is reflected in its lawyers’ pragmatic approach to helping its clients creatively solve problems.

The firm’s lawyers regularly try cases in Iowa’s state and federal courts and handle appellate litigation in those courts as well. The firm’s lawyers also engage in alternative dispute resolution, such as arbitration, mediation, and collaborative law (in family law matters).

Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman’s transactional attorneys work in areas ranging from corporate law to mergers and acquisitions to real estate, intellectual property, trusts and estates, bankruptcy, and taxation. Most of our trial lawyers perform double duty by maintaining substantive areas of emphasis – whether in business torts, labor and employment, insurance, professional or product liability, family law, or construction. In every case, it is the firm’s aim to bring vigor to serving the client’s interest.

The firm’s clients match Iowa’s diverse economy: transportation, construction, manufacturing, health care, financial services, and agriculture. Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman lawyers are active in community and civic organizations pursuant to a wide range of personal interests and are actively involved with affairs of the bar on a local, state, and national basis.

Our attorneys have been recognized and rated by clients and peers in Great Plains Super Lawyers®, Best Lawyers®, Chambers USA®, Martindale-Hubbell® and Benchmark Litigation®. The firm is also a member of the prestigious USLAW Network, an organization comprised of highly rated law firms that are selected by invitation only.

Simmons Perrine

The rich history of Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC dates back a century when James H. Trewin joined forces with his son, Harold R. Trewin and Haven Y. Simmons in 1916. Twenty-five years later, Beahl T. Perrine and Justin W. Albright joined the three-person law firm. Beahl Perrine was a central figure for what would become Simmons, Perrine, Albright & Ellwood. He helped grow the firm to be the largest in Cedar Rapids, Iowa while practicing law for 52 years before his death in 1989. Mr. Perrine and his wife, Irene, were also very active in the community, most notably for helping to incorporate The Hall Perrine Foundation. (Photos L to R:) Haven Y. Simmons and Beahl T. Perrine.

Moyer & Bergman

Moyer & Bergman was founded in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1961 by Clinton Moyer and William Bergman. The two-person firm quickly grew to be a full-service law firm with 21 attorneys handling some of the most complex matters. One such matter was the 1970 inception of Keystone Resort, located in Summit County, Colorado. Mr. Bergman, together with long time Summit County resident Max Dercum, is credited with co-founding what has now become an internationally recognized high mountain skiing, recreational and convention resort. Moyer & Bergman attorneys provided all the major legal services to the resort’s creators. Keystone Resort was strongly considered for the Alpine events in the 1976 Olympics and could potentially be in contention for future Olympics. (Photos L to R): Clinton Moyer and William Bergman.

Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC

As specialization within the practice of law became more relevant, it only seemed natural to combine the two law firms who were well established in their own rights. In January of 2009, the firms became one - Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC. At the time of the merger, 52 attorneys were based in the U.S. Bank building and an additional eight attorneys were located in an Iowa City location. The firms have now successfully grown as one and are currently one of the largest law firms in Iowa.
